La Cruz de Ferro, or the Iron Cross, is one of the most iconic and spiritual landmarks along the Camino de Santiago. Located between Foncebadรณn and Manjarรญn at an altitude of about 1,500 meters, it’s the highest point on the French Way. Pilgrims traditionally bring a stone from home to leave at the base of the crossโsymbolizing the burdens they wish to let go of.
After passing La Cruz de Ferro, the trail continues downhill toward El Acebo de San Miguel, a picturesque mountain village in the Bierzo region. From there, pilgrims often walk to Ponferrada, a historic city known for its medieval Templar castle.
The route from El Acebo to Ponferrada is about 16 km and includes a steep descent, passing through villages like Riego de Ambrรณs and Molinaseca. El Acebo offers several welcoming albergues and a peaceful atmosphere to rest and reflect, including the Parochial Albergue Santiago Apรณstol and La Casa del Peregrino.
