On Langkawi Island in Malaysia, some resorts and villages still keep beautiful old Malay buildings made of timber.
These houses are usually raised on stilts, so air can move under the floor and the rooms stay cooler in the hot, wet climate. The stilts also protect the home from floods and animals, and help the house last longer in the tropics.
The walls are wooden and light, which makes it easy to repair or extend the house when the family grows. The roofs are steep and wide, with deep overhanging edges that give shade from the strong sun and heavy rain. Many houses have finely carved panels and shutters around the windows. These carvings are not only decoration. Small openings in the wood let hot air escape and fresh breeze come inside, so the house stays airy without fans or air conditioning. side, the space is often open and flexible. A shaded veranda at the front is used to welcome guests, talk with neighbours and enjoy the evening wind. Further inside, slightly raised areas give more privacy for family life, prayer and sleep. Kitchens were once separate or set to the back for safety.
Today, traditional Malay houses in Langkawi are sometimes turned into heritage villas or museums, so visitors can see how people in Kedah and northern Malaysia lived in the past.
