What are NGOs?

NGO is an acronym for Non-Governmental Organizations that operate independently of the government, to pursue goals of social utility or political causes. In other words, they are non-profit organizations that operate mainly in the field of development cooperation.

These can be voluntary associations or large, hierarchically structured organizations.

More in detail, NGOs must meet three requirements. They are:

• private institutions;
• non-profit organizations;
• they must have a solidarity mission.

The World Bank has divided them, regardless of the area of ​​intervention, into two macro-categories.

1. The operating NGOs, who work directly in the field to pursue projects and activities in line with their mission. The category that ended up at the centre of the public debate in recent days.
2. Sector NGOs, which are spokesmen for precise causes.

The latter often play the role of advocacy and critical opposition from governments.

NGO Areas of Intervention:

Areas of intervention can vary greatly:

• defence of human rights,
• protection of the environment
• inclusion of socially weak groups.

In any case, organizations carry out their work independently of institutions, national governments and supranational bodies.

The relationship with the institutions, however, can be one of collaboration and cooperation.

So are they organs above the law?

Absolutely not! Independence and autonomy should not be confused with a lack of regulation. In Italy, for example, they must be recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Only the organizations that receive the certificate of eligibility, therefore, can carry out their activity and participate in different projects.
