Horsemanship 🐎🤠

Horsemanship volunteering opportunity with horses in Spain

Explore horsemanship volunteering opportunities involving horse care, handling, groundwork, riding, behaviour and practical learning with horses on farms, ranches, sanctuaries and other equine projects.

Horsemanship can include much more than riding. Depending on the project, participants may learn about daily horse care, communication, handling, stable management, groundwork or other skills connected with responsible work around horses.

Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date and confirm current activities, required experience and horse-care arrangements directly with the host before applying.

What does horsemanship mean?

Horsemanship broadly refers to the knowledge and practical skills involved in handling, caring for and working with horses. It can include understanding behaviour, safe handling, groundwork, riding, equipment, stable management and communication between horse and handler.

Different hosts may use the term in different ways. Some projects focus primarily on everyday horse care, while others may include riding, training or specific approaches such as natural horsemanship.

A project being tagged as horsemanship does not mean that every participant will be allowed to ride or train horses. Activities should depend on the volunteer’s experience and the needs and welfare of the individual animals.

Possible volunteer activities

Depending on the project, participants may help with:

  • feeding, watering and grooming horses;
  • cleaning stables, shelters and paddocks;
  • leading and safely handling suitable horses;
  • groundwork under supervision;
  • maintaining tack and horse equipment;
  • pasture, fencing and stable maintenance;
  • observing or assisting with training activities;
  • riding where appropriate experience is required;
  • supporting rescue or rehabilitation work.

The listing should clearly explain which activities are actually expected. Basic horse care, riding and professional training require different levels of experience and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Horse welfare and training methods

The horse’s welfare should remain central to any horsemanship project. Ask how horses are housed, fed, exercised and rested and what veterinary and hoof-care support is available.

If training or behavioural work is involved, ask which methods are used, who supervises participants and what previous experience is required. Training should prioritise welfare and should not rely on unnecessary pain, fear or force.

Volunteers should not be expected to independently handle frightened, aggressive, untrained or otherwise challenging horses without appropriate experience and supervision.

Experience and role boundaries

Be accurate about your previous horse experience when applying. Riding occasionally, caring for a family horse and professionally training horses are very different levels of experience.

Riding ability does not automatically qualify someone to train horses, start young horses, manage difficult behaviour or teach other riders.

Veterinary treatment, dentistry, medication and other specialist procedures should remain with appropriately qualified and authorised professionals.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the host’s website, email address or application procedure.

Before applying, confirm:

  • the exact horsemanship activities involved;
  • the experience required;
  • whether riding or training is included;
  • who provides instruction and supervision;
  • weekly hours and days off;
  • accommodation and meals;
  • minimum stay;
  • insurance requirements;
  • any fees, deposits or other financial conditions.

Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

A participant fee does not automatically make an equine project more or less responsible, ethical or worthwhile.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select participants, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. It does not process participant payments between travellers and host organisations. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of an opportunity or horsemanship method.

Safety around horses

Working with horses can involve kicks, bites, falls, crushing injuries and sudden movement. Ask what safety instructions and protective equipment are required and avoid handling unfamiliar horses beyond your experience.

If riding forms part of the project, confirm what protective equipment is provided or required and make sure your insurance covers the specific equestrian activities involved.

Tasks involving fencing, machinery, heavy hay bales or farm equipment may introduce additional risks and should only be undertaken with appropriate instruction.

Horsemanship exchange or employment?

Some horsemanship opportunities take place on private farms, sanctuaries or community projects, while others are connected with commercial ranches, riding schools, trekking centres or equestrian tourism businesses.

Regular stable work, exercising commercial horses, teaching clients, guiding paying riders or performing duties normally assigned to employees may be considered employment under local labour or immigration rules even when accommodation is provided instead of a salary.

For additional guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges and visas for volunteering abroad.
