Explore volunteer opportunities, cultural exchanges and language programmes where participants stay with a host family, household or a project that genuinely operates as a homestay.
Homestays can offer closer contact with everyday local life than conventional tourist accommodation, but arrangements vary considerably. Some are family-based cultural exchanges, while others combine accommodation with language practice, teaching, household help or other volunteer activities.
What is a homestay? 🏡🤝
A homestay generally means staying in a local home or in accommodation organised around living with a host family or household. On this page, the homestay should be a genuine part of the experience rather than simply another word for receiving accommodation.
Homestay and other hospitality exchanges
A homestay can be part of a wider hospitality or cultural exchange, but the terms are not interchangeable. Staying in a hostel, guesthouse, B&B, volunteer dormitory or separate property does not automatically make an opportunity a homestay. Likewise, home exchange refers to reciprocal use of homes and is a different arrangement.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm who you will live with, where you will sleep, whether rooms or bathrooms are shared, what meals are included and what household rules apply. Also check the actual volunteer activities, weekly hours, days off, minimum stay and any fees or contributions.
If the homestay involves childcare, tutoring or living with children, make sure the role, supervision and household boundaries are clearly defined before arriving.
