What counts as construction? 🛠️
Construction involves building, altering or repairing structures and their components. In volunteer projects this may include walls, roofs, floors, foundations, shelters, cabins or other practical building work. Renovation, carpentry, painting and general maintenance can overlap with construction, but they should use their more specific tags when those activities better describe the actual role.
Skills, tools and safety
Construction can involve power tools, ladders, scaffolding, heavy materials, dust and other hazards. Ask what tasks you will actually perform, what protective equipment is provided and who supervises unfamiliar work. Volunteers should not undertake structural, electrical, plumbing or other specialised work beyond their skills or any qualifications required locally.
For commercial properties or regular productive work, also check whether employment, immigration or insurance rules apply to the arrangement.
