Explore volunteering opportunities in Thailand, including community projects, environmental initiatives, organic farms, animal welfare, education and other independent volunteering experiences.
Projects may be located in northern Thailand, Bangkok, rural communities, islands or southern regions. Some opportunities may be seasonal, archived or no longer active, so always check the publication date and confirm current availability directly with the host or organisation.
How to use this page
Open the opportunity that interests you and read the full announcement carefully. Check the publication date, activity dates and any application deadline before contacting the host or organisation.
To apply or request more information, look for the contact details at the end of the listing. Depending on the project, these may include an official website, email address, phone number or application form.
Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, transport arrangements and any fees or contributions directly with the host.
Some projects may provide accommodation, meals or other forms of hospitality, while others may request a contribution towards food, accommodation or project costs. If money is requested, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and whether any part is refundable before making a payment.
Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.
Visas and volunteering in Thailand
Entry and immigration requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay, host type and the activities you intend to undertake. Do not assume that visa-free entry or a tourist visa automatically permits volunteering or an unpaid work exchange.
Thailand has a specific Non-Immigrant O visa category for certain forms of unpaid voluntary work, including volunteering with government agencies, state enterprises and eligible foundations or associations registered or authorised to operate in Thailand.
Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs guidance also states that volunteering can require an appropriate non-immigrant visa and work authorisation even when the volunteer receives no salary. The requirements for an NGO, registered association or government project should not automatically be assumed to apply to an informal exchange with a farm, restaurant, hostel, guesthouse or other private or commercial host.
Before accepting a project, ask the host to explain the legal basis on which foreign volunteers participate and verify the requirements that apply to your specific activities.
For current visa information, consult the official Thailand e-Visa website and the relevant Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General.
Working with children, animals and local communities
Some projects in Thailand involve schools, children, animal rescue or community activities. These opportunities can require particular care when choosing a host and understanding the volunteer’s role.
If a project involves children, ask about safeguarding procedures, supervision, volunteer screening and the qualifications required for the activities. Short-term volunteers should not be placed in roles that require professional teaching, childcare, counselling or unsupervised responsibility without appropriate preparation.
Animal rescue and veterinary projects may involve bites, scratches, zoonotic diseases and unfamiliar handling procedures. Confirm what experience is required, what supervision is provided and whether volunteers are expected to perform tasks that require professional veterinary qualifications.
Insurance and practical arrangements
Make sure your insurance covers the activities involved in the project. Farming, construction, animal handling, motorbike use, diving, outdoor work and other activities may not automatically be covered by every standard travel policy.
Travel advice and local conditions can also affect insurance coverage. Check current official information for the exact region you plan to visit, particularly for projects located near international borders or in areas subject to specific travel advisories.
For additional general guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges.
Important: project availability, fees, immigration requirements, regional travel conditions and insurance coverage can change. Confirm current information directly with the host and consult relevant official sources before making travel or financial commitments.
