Stockholm is one of the most beautiful capitals in the world, built on 14 islands that stretch proudly eastwards from Lake Mรคlaren. It overlooks the Baltic Sea, surrounded by water and with a beautiful archipelago on its doorstep. In 2010, it was named Europe’s first Green Capital for its commitment to improving the urban environment.
Northern Sweden, with its legendary Swedish Lapland, is unique. Only here is it possible to sit around the fire with a Sami guide, tell about the day spent driving a dog sledge around the fire or stand open-mouthed in front of the northern lights. In summer, you can go fly-fishing for salmon and alpine salmon under the midnight sun or tackle the legendary King’s Trail (Kungsleden). Luleรฅ and Kiruna, at the Arctic Circle, are the last outposts of civilisation, modernity and comfort just minutes from the wilderness.
Southern Sweden is one of the most fertile areas in Europe. It is also home to many small producers of gastronomic excellence and farmers’ markets.
- Malmรถ is a small and cosy city with an excellent variety of cultural attractions. Don’t miss the new Museum of Modern Art (Moderna Museet).
- Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden and has the largest and most important port in Scandinavia. Trade and shipping have always produced wealth for the city, which was home to the Swedish East India Company in the 18th century.
Also, during your volunteer trip don’t miss the charming towns of Uppsala and Sigtuna.
