Accommodation, meals and contributions
Some projects provide accommodation and meals in exchange for a reasonable amount of voluntary help. Others may request a daily or monthly contribution to cover food, housing, transport, training or project expenses.
A contribution fee does not automatically make a project more responsible or effective. Before paying, ask what the contribution covers, who receives it, when it must be paid and whether receipts or a refund policy are available. Verify the organisation independently and avoid sending money or sensitive documents before confirming its identity.
Choose projects responsibly
Prioritise locally led projects with clearly defined activities, realistic expectations and appropriate supervision. Volunteers should support local staff and communities rather than replace paid workers or perform essential professional duties without suitable qualifications.
Healthcare, counselling, social work and other specialist activities should only be undertaken by appropriately qualified volunteers, with legal authorisation and professional supervision.
Children and vulnerable people
Voluntouring promotes opportunities for adults aged 18 and over. Projects involving children or vulnerable people require additional safeguards. Ask for a written safeguarding policy, appropriate volunteer screening, training, clear role boundaries and continuous supervision by qualified local staff.

Visas, health and local conditions
Visa requirements, health recommendations and security conditions vary by country, nationality and type of activity. Even unpaid volunteering may require specific authorisation. Check the latest information with official immigration authorities, embassies and government travel advisories before booking.
Consider travel and medical insurance that explicitly covers volunteering or work exchange activities, emergency treatment and evacuation where necessary.
