Don’t be long where you don’t belong.

Smiling backpacker standing on a country path with a large green hiking pack, turning back toward the camera in an open field with trees. Quote reads, “Don’t be long where you don’t belong.”

“Don’t be long where you don’t belong.”

Author unknown. This is a modern reminder shared widely online about trusting where you feel at home.

Travel and volunteering can show very clearly when a place, project, or group is not a good match. Maybe the values feel off, the expectations are unclear, or your body is always tense. You are allowed to listen to that. Talk honestly with your host, try to solve problems with respect, and if it still does not feel right, move on when you safely can.

Your time and energy are precious. Save them for the people and projects where you feel welcome and useful.
