There are two ways of spreading light to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. – Edith Wharton

“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”

Edith Wharton, American novelist and the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, wrote about how light spreads in two ways. That thought fits volunteering perfectly. Some days you are the candle, starting a project, bringing energy, and leading a task. Other days you are the mirror, reflecting light by supporting the team, listening, cooking, translating, or simply encouraging someone who is tired.

Both roles matter. Communities thrive when people share the load, notice what is needed, and pass the light around. On the road, choose the part that helps most in the moment and switch when the team needs something different. That is how small efforts turn into real change.
