If the ocean can calm itself, so can you. We are both salt water mixed with air. – Nayyrah Waheed

A woman with red hair swims underwater in a clear blue ocean with sun rays filtering through, accompanied by a calming quote by Nayyrah Waheed: 'If the ocean can calm itself, so can you. We are both salt water mixed with air.' Image by Voluntouring.org.

“If the ocean can calm itself, so can you. We are both salt water mixed with air.”

is widely attributed to Nayyirah Waheed, not “Wajeed” (the correct spelling is Nayyirah Waheed), a contemporary poet known for her minimalistic and emotionally resonant style.

However, there is no confirmed source, such as a page from one of her published works (Salt, Nejma, etc.), that definitively proves she wrote it. It’s possible the quote has been paraphrased or misattributed online, as often happens with viral poetry.

A reminder from the depths 🌊 If the ocean can find stillness after a storm, maybe we can too. In moments of overwhelm, return to your breath, salt water and air, just like the sea.

Scientifically, the human body is about 60% water, and our blood contains salt concentrations similar to seawater.

It’s no wonder we feel connected to the ocean.

Like the sea, we hold turbulence and calm within us. Understanding this connection can be grounding in times of stress.
