photo credit: Karolina Grabowska – World Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed every year on May 28.
It was first celebrated in 2014, initiated by the German-based NGO WASH United.
The date was chosen because the average menstrual cycle is 28 days, and May is the fifth month, reflecting the average of five days of menstruation.
The day aims to break the silence and stigma surrounding menstruation and to raise awareness about the importance of good menstrual hygiene management. This includes access to:
- sanitary products,
- clean water,
- safe, private spaces for managing menstruation.
Many people around the world, especially in developing countries, face challenges in managing their periods safely and with dignity due to lack of resources and cultural taboos.
The main goal of Menstrual Hygiene Day is to create a world where no one is held back because they menstruate.
This involves advocating for better education about menstruation, improved access to menstrual products, and the elimination of period-related stigma. By promoting open conversations and supportive policies, the initiative strives to ensure that everyone can manage their menstruation in a healthy and dignified way.
