Make a Difference in Calais as a humanitarian volunteer

Are you a registered healthcare professional looking for a life-changing volunteer opportunity? The First Aid Support Team (FAST) has just published on their website that they are searching for a Field Coordinator to join their mission in northern France. This opportunity, set to begin at the end of October or the start of November 2024, is aimed at dedicated healthcare professionals passionate about offering first aid and humanitarian support to displaced people in Calais and Dunkirk.

The role demands a minimum commitment of three months and provides a chance to engage in meaningful work within refugee camps while receiving a contribution towards living expenses.

About the role

As a Field Coordinator, you will lead and organise the team of volunteers who provide essential first aid to refugees and displaced people in northern France.

Your role will include:

  • managing first aid shifts,
  • acting as a liaison between FAST and other NGOs,
  • maintaining medical supplies,
  • coordinating the overall logistics of the first aid clinics in the refugee camps.

This is a voluntary position that requires a minimum commitment of three months.ย Although unpaid, FAST offers a contribution towards living expenses to help volunteers during their stay.

Why volunteer with FAST?

FAST is entirely volunteer-led, from the board of directors to field teams on the ground.

Working with the organization means joining a group of dedicated healthcare professionals who believe in the basic human right to healthcare and the dignity of every individual, regardless of their circumstances.

Volunteers are at the heart of FASTโ€™s operations.

The organization provides critical first aid services to displaced people, often in challenging environments, and refers those with serious health issues to other local services. By joining FAST, you will make a real difference in the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in Europe.

Who can apply?

This role is open to registered nurses, doctors, and paramedics.

While no previous humanitarian experience is required, FAST welcomes applicants from a variety of clinical backgrounds. The team offers full training and support to ensure volunteers feel confident and prepared to handle the role’s demands.

An understanding of the humanitarian crisis in northern France is desirable, but not mandatory. Volunteers will be supported by an experienced remote team of health professionals, to ensure that every step of the journey is guided and backed by expert advice.

Key responsibilities:
  • Oversee and coordinate first aid services in refugee camps.
  • Manage volunteersโ€™ schedules and first aid supplies.
  • Liaise with local NGOs and other organizations providing humanitarian support.
  • Act as the main contact point for on-the-ground operations.
  • Participate in regular training sessions to ensure volunteers maintain high standards of careโ€‹.
