Innoceana is a nonprofit marine conservation organization that runs paid diving expeditions in Costa Rica and sometimes in Spain.
Certified divers join a small group for about a week of conservation focused diving, theory classes and citizen science. Each expedition combines daily boat dives with training in topics such as 3D coral mapping, invertebrate monitoring, water quality studies, microplastics and threatened species. Participants help collect data for Innoceana’s research projects and learn how climate change affects local marine ecosystems. The expedition fee, currently similar to an all inclusive 7 day dive course, usually covers shared accommodation, meals, dive equipment, local transport, conservation materials and Innoceana certifications. Open Water Diver certification, travel and dive insurance, and good health are required. These trips are not a free volunteer exchange and there is no salary. They are best for ocean lovers who can afford a fee based educational experience that supports marine conservation.
