Small earthen house on a green sustainable farm in rural Sichuan, China

Organic farm volunteering in Sichuan, China

Our small community farm in southwestern China combines organic agriculture, an eco-restaurant and nature education for children from the city. The project is called International Kitchen because we love to exchange culture through food. If you enjoy nature, cooking and simple rural life, you are very welcome to join us.

About the farm

We speak Sichuan dialect, Mandarin and a little English. On the farm we grow vegetables and fruit, keep some animals and cook local dishes in our restaurant. We also reuse old wooden farming tools in creative ways, turning them into art instead of throwing them away.

Volunteer tasks

Volunteers help with a mix of activities such as farming and gardening, animal care, simple building or cleaning, language exchange, computer and social media support, writing and general help around the farm. Art volunteers can help us transform traditional tools and walls into new artworks. There are also opportunities to support our nature education program for children.

Schedule and exchange
  • Help: about 4–5 hours per day, 5 days per week.
  • Duration: we welcome volunteers all year round.
  • Exchange: free accommodation and local meals.
Accommodation and food

Volunteers stay in a private room with independent bathroom. We cook classic Sichuan cuisine using fresh vegetables from the farm. We can usually host vegetarians and vegans if you let us know in advance.

Community goals and benefits

Our aim is to build a bridge between volunteers and our farmyard, so people from different cultures can explore nature together and learn from each other. While staying here you can practice Chinese, learn traditional farming techniques and local recipes, and experience everyday life in a real rural community.

Practical information
  • Location: near Mianyang, Sichuan Province, China.
  • Volunteers hosted: more than two at a time.
  • Internet: Wi-Fi available.
  • Visa: we cannot provide visa support or invitation letters.
  • Paying guests: we can sometimes host eco-tourists / solidarity visitors on a paying basis.
