Volunteering at the Bosnian Pyramids: between alternative archaeology and scientific controversy

The Bosnian Pyramids, located near Visoko in Bosnia and Herzegovina, have been a subject of significant debate since 2005. Semir Osmanagiฤ‡, a Bosnian-American businessman, proposed that these hills are ancient, man-made pyramids constructed by a prehistoric civilisation. He named the largest hill the โ€œPyramid of the Sunโ€ and suggested that surrounding hills form a complex of pyramids aligned with cosmic principles.

Osmanagiฤ‡ claims that these structures are over 30,000 years old and possess unique energetic properties, including unexplained radiation emissions and healing effects. He also posits that a network of underground tunnels, known as the Ravne Tunnels, connects the pyramids and was excavated by ancient builders for spiritual or energetic purposes.

However, the scientific community has largely dismissed these claims.

Geologists and archaeologists have concluded that the formations are natural hills composed of layered sedimentary rock shaped by geological processes over millennia. The European Association of Archaeologists has condemned the project as a โ€œcruel hoax,โ€ expressing concern over potential damage to genuine archaeological sites in the area.

Despite the controversy, the site has become a popular tourist destination and hosts various volunteer programs.

The Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun Foundation offers opportunities for individuals to participate in excavation activities, particularly during the summer months. These programs are open to both professionals and non-professionals, providing hands-on experience in the field.

Volunteers typically engage in activities such as

  • clearing tunnels,
  • participating in digs,
  • Assisting with site maintenance.
  • The foundation emphasises the communal and experiential aspects of the program, highlighting opportunities for cultural exchange and personal growth.

While the scientific validity of the Bosnian Pyramids is strongly contested, the volunteer programs offer participants an experience that combines physical activity, cultural immersion, and engagement with alternative historical narratives. Prospective volunteers should approach the opportunity with critical thinking and an understanding of the ongoing debate surrounding the siteโ€™s authenticity.
