Rishikesh, Himalayas
Rishikesh sits along the Ganges at the foot of the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand. Known as the Yoga Capital of the World, it blends temple life, river rituals, and green hills. Visitors drop in for yoga or meditation classes, stay for the evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat, and try white-water rafting in season. Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula link both banks, with ashrams, markets, and cafÃĐs clustered around them.
The best time to volunteer or visit is October to March. Summer brings warm days and cool nights. Monsoon usually arrives from June to September. The nearest airport is Dehradunâs Jolly Grant, about 20 km away, with good road links to Haridwar and Delhi.
Dress modestly near temples, avoid alcohol by the riverfront, and respect local customs. Rishikesh also works well as a base for treks and nearby hill towns.
