PDS (Perspective Development Skills) is a grassroots NGO in Zanzibar that empowers the local community through practical education. At its center near Stone Town, volunteers help with English and French classes, science and arts, sports and dance, driving courses, gardening and farming, business management and communication skills. The goal is to support teens and elders to develop livelihoods, in partnership with local organizations and with government support. Volunteers contribute about 5 hours per day, choosing morning or afternoon shifts, with ample free time and optional days off for travel. In exchange, PDS offers airport or ferry pickup, hostel-style accommodation with air conditioning, key-secured single or shared rooms, shared bathrooms, three daily meals, a garden area for relaxing and on-site security. A participation fee of 5 USD per day covers meals and lodging. The center is 30 minutes from Stone Town and under an hour from Paje, Kizimkazi and Nungwi.
