Teach English in Hanoi! – Founded in 2014, VCV is an organisation for educational development, cultural exchange, and charity based in Hanoi, Vietnam.VCV specialises in helping Vietnamese students of all ages improve their English language skills. We aim to provide our students with the opportunity to improve their conversational English and learn the correct pronunciation of English words. Additionally, through our classes and activities, we hope to improve our students’ overall well-being by increasing their confidence and creativity with the English language and opening doors for them to find well-paid jobs.
Our English teaching programs target local communities, specifically the disadvantaged in an effort to give everyone a chance to learn English. VCV mission is to pair international volunteers and Vietnamese people helping to broaden the horizons of both parties.
At VCV we believe that education is fundamental to sustainable development, therefore, our aim is to create an open and fair learning environment for all our students. At many universities in Vietnam, students learn a lot of English grammar but rarely learn to correctly engage in real conversation. Once they graduate, they have difficulties finding employment in the best-paying jobs, because these jobs often require high English language skills.
We are humbled by the fact that since opening in 2014, we have hosted over a hundred volunteers per year and are proud of the positive impact that we have made in the community. We are excited to continue enhancing the lives of both the volunteers and the students who participate!
Who are our students?
All of our students are people of varying ages who love English and cultural exchanges. They include toddlers who are very cute but are shy and lacking in confidence. There are also high school and university students who are full of enthusiasm but who have to be encouraged to develop their confidence and aim high with their English. And there are also adults who work for large companies or organisations, and are eager to improve their listening and speaking skills to enhance their work opportunities. Lastly, we have single/expecting mothers. The fact that they are women is disadvantageous in our male-dominated society. Enhancing their English skills will
allow them more opportunities to get a new job after a long time off to care for their baby at home.
Volunteerâs help
VCV is seeking English-speaking volunteers from all over the world who are social, friendly, hardworking, funny and responsible. We also would like volunteers who are easy-going, and talkative to help create a friendly, family-like environment around the dinner table. It is important that you speak English to an advanced level and with a clear accent. We ask of this because we hope to give our students the best quality experience and education.
VCV volunteers work no more than 3 classroom hours per day in the afternoon or evening, mornings are open to exploring Hanoi or relaxing. Typically, volunteers have 2 days off per week. We also host an optional outing once per week with the adult students to encourage casual conversation and friendships.
1. Help with teaching English in our non-profit classes in the Hanoi centre.
1.1. Teach English to the kids in the Hanoi centre
- Age: 4-15 years old.
- Class size: 6-15.
- Material: teaching assistants, detailed lesson plan, list of games, whiteboard, flashcards (4-8 years old).
- Throughout your class, our Vietnamese-speaking assistant will be on hand to help you explain lesson plans to the children.
- The children are very nice, enthusiastic and eager to learn.
- They have some experience with learning English previously.
1.2 Teach English to adults in Hanoi centre.
- Age: 16+ years old.
- Class size: 6-15.
- Material: teaching assistants, general lesson plan, list of games, whiteboard and computer.
- Throughout your class, our Vietnamese teaching assistant will be on hand to help you explain lesson plans to the beginner students.
- Help with pronunciation, speaking, and listening.
- The students are enthusiastic learners, very friendly and always eager to help out our volunteers.
2. Help with FREE activities surrounding Hanoi.
Besides teaching students inside the class, we aim to increase their confidence, conversational abilities and skills in the workplace. This is done by having a cultural exchange between volunteers and students, including kids and adults, on Sundays (which are optional for volunteers to attend). We focus on activities such as free talk, picnic, team building, day trip, charity, food tour, monthly meet-up, football, clean-up etc. This is a great way to share experience, explore Vietnam and participate in cultural exchanges through the local people, foods, and customs. If you have any work experience/skills to share with the students. They are also happy to share with your local culture.
How will travellers benefit from a cultural exchange, and what could they learn?
Volunteers can expect to make lifelong friends and learn about the friendliness and openness of Vietnamese culture. You can also expect to meet lots of new people from all over the world. In doing such valuable work, you can also expect your communication skills, confidence and cultural awareness to improve. These are all skills that you can take with you onto the next stage of life; making you a well travelled and better overall person.
Accommodation
- Free accommodation, includes 3 meals per day: breakfast (Oatmeal, bread with jam and fruit, etc.), lunch and dinner (pasta, bread, noodles, rice, curry, soup, etc.)
- Food for vegetarians/vegans is available
- Free Wi-Fi, laundry, hot water, AC, smart TV.
- Free drinking: Coffee, Lipton tea, green tea.
- A shared bedroom (3-4 volunteers per bedroom) but a private bed with own mattress,
- pillow, blanket, sheet.
- 2 Toilets with showers.
Our location
- Only a 3-5 minute walk to the bus station to get to Old Town and around Hanoi ($0.4 for a ticket), or 15 minute walk to the bus station to catch the bus/car to travel around Vietnam.
- Everything you need is in our area. Surrounding our area are lots of banks with ATMs,n supermarkets, a local market, a taxi, a hospital, a clinic, a pharmacy, a mall, gyms, yoga
- centre, bowling, a swimming pool, etc.
- There are two nice cinemas ($3.5 for a ticket), restaurants, and lovely coffee shops with different styles ($1-2 per a drink)
- Only 20-30 minutes by motorbike to the Old Quarter or walking to the bus station (5 minutes) to get to Old Quarter and around Hanoi.
- Itâs also easy to go to My Dinh station (1.5 km from the apartment) to catch the bus/car to travel in Vietnam.
- Close to the National Sports Stadium (My Dinh stadium). Nearby are the Hanoi museum and the National Convention Center.
