Group post no-nos: what to avoid when posting on Facebook ℹ️

Screenshot of a Facebook post from a new member asking for volunteering recommendations across several European cities, with a large red X over the image and the text “Looking for recommendations.”

This screenshot shows a very broad “looking for recommendations” post (multiple cities, short time frame, no clear project type). In many volunteering abroad groups, posts like this are often declined because the answers already exist in older threads, and the request is too general to help members respond well.

Admins and moderators usually want new members to search the group first. That simple step keeps the feed from filling up with the same destination questions, and it helps you find detailed, experience-based answers immediately. It also pushes posts toward better quality: specific dates, realistic availability, skills, and clear expectations about costs and what’s included.

A better way to ask
Search the group for your destination first, then ask one focused question. Mention your dates, your skills, how many hours per week you can commit, and what kind of placement you want (hostel, farm, NGO, conservation). If budget matters, ask about costs and what they cover instead of asking for “free” options.
