Arusha
Arusha is a city located in northern Tanzania with a population of about 400,000; it lies at the foot of Mount Meru and is located on the eastern arm of the Great Rift Valley.
Arusha has a strategic location, it is in fact close to:
- Serengeti National Park,
- the Ngorongoro Crater,
- Lake Manyara,
- Olduvai Gorge,
- Tarangire National Park
- and of course, Arusha National Park, which is only 35 kilometers away.
The city is also the base of departure for those who want to attempt the climb to Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro.
Being an important diplomatic centre, Arusha houses the headquarters of the East African Community, an economic community made up of the states of East Africa, while in the past it was also the headquarters of the International Crime Tribunal for Rwanda.
The city does not have much to offer in terms of historic buildings, but the Central Business Area, whose centrepiece is the Clock Tower has good restaurants and some interesting buildings, such as the Arusha Hotel, which can be considered one of the first hotels in East Africa, having been built in 1894.
Not to be missed, are the markets in the centre of the city, where you can find everything from food products to clothing, and it is possible to find small souvenirs such as handmade pendants and warm, colourful Masai blankets.
The Maasai market is located behind the Arusha Hotel and offers a wide range of handicrafts, not only Maasai: you can find wooden items, ritual masks, paintings and other traditional objects.
Arusha has an economy centred on tourism, but also on agriculture, in particular the cultivation of flowers and coffee.

Volunteering in Arusha, Tanzaniaโฆ for independent travellers!
Some of these opportunities areย freeย (you receiveย free food and accommodationย in exchange for voluntary work). Others require aย daily/monthly contribution feeย for the food and the accommodation. Remember that many areas in Tanzania are still developing andย volunteering canโt always be a โfreeโ thing.
If you want to have an โimpactโ but only have a few weeks to volunteer abroad, then we recommend you choose the non-free opportunities, especially if you can only volunteer for a shortย period.
Our website, Voluntouring, is not a touristic agency and is not taking any agency intermediation fees from the organizations listed below. For this reason, all of your money will go directly to support the NGOs and your stay in Africa. This is also why you will find that the fees for the volunteering experiences, when requested, are generally much lower than usual.
