Teaching 🧑‍🏫

Students working on illustrated worksheets at a classroom desk

Explore volunteer teaching opportunities in schools and community projects, including classroom teaching, tutoring, educational workshops and online learning support.

This archive is not limited to English teaching. Read each announcement to understand which subjects are involved, who the learners are and what qualifications or experience the role requires. Teaching independently, assisting a teacher and supporting informal activities involve different responsibilities.

Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Check the publication date and confirm current activities, requirements and availability before applying.

Teaching abroad and community learning

Teaching opportunities may involve working alongside local educators in schools or supporting learning activities organised by community groups. Depending on the project, this could include subject lessons, tutoring, mentoring or educational workshops.

Ask which subjects and age groups need support, which language is used in lessons and what materials are available. Activities should follow the educational team’s priorities rather than assume that visiting volunteers need to introduce different teaching methods.

Confirm how your proposed dates and length of stay fit the teaching programme. A short holiday or a longer sabbatical does not automatically match a school’s needs or timetable.

For language-specific roles, browse the opportunities for teaching English abroad.

Professional development and teaching resources

Experienced educators may be able to contribute to workshops for fellow teachers, exchange teaching approaches or help prepare learning materials where this support is requested.

Projects involving curriculum development should clarify the volunteer’s responsibilities, the relevant educational requirements and who reviews or approves the materials. Resources should be developed with the teaching team and adapted to the learners, language and materials available.

You can also browse organisations offering volunteering opportunities, checking each announcement for a specific request for educational support.

Online teaching and mentoring

Online roles may involve tutoring, helping students practise a subject or supporting agreed learning activities remotely. Check the expected schedule, time zone, language requirements, internet connection and teaching platform before committing.

Ask who coordinates the sessions, how volunteers receive guidance and what preparation is expected between lessons. For activities involving children, online contact should follow the organisation’s safeguarding procedures and agreed communication channels.

Explore the online volunteering opportunities archive for remote roles, including opportunities outside education.

Qualifications and role boundaries

Describe your subject knowledge, teaching qualifications, language skills and classroom experience accurately when applying. Ask which credentials the host requires and whether they are appropriate for the proposed role.

Knowing a subject well is not the same as being prepared to teach it. If you have little teaching experience, look for a clearly defined support role with preparation and supervision rather than accepting independent responsibility for a class.

If you are expected to plan a curriculum, assess students or train other teachers, clarify the required experience and who provides educational oversight. Volunteer activities should support locally led education, not be used to replace paid teaching staff.

Safeguarding and continuity

For roles involving children, ask for the organisation’s child protection policy and code of conduct. Confirm how volunteers are screened, which references or background checks are required, what training is provided and whom to contact with a safeguarding concern.

Any individual tutoring should follow agreed safeguarding arrangements. Follow the organisation’s rules on communication with students, photographs, recordings, social media and personal information, including during online activities.

Ask how your contribution fits the existing teaching schedule and how learning continues after you leave. Agree on any lesson notes, materials or handover needed by the teaching team.

Read more about volunteering with children and safer alternatives.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details section at the end of the listing and follow its application instructions. Do not use the comments section as a substitute for contacting the host through the indicated procedure.

Before applying, confirm:

  • the subjects, learners’ age groups and typical class sizes;
  • the exact teaching duties and required qualifications or experience;
  • teaching hours, preparation time, other duties and days off;
  • available materials, training, supervision and safeguarding arrangements;
  • programme dates, school holidays, minimum stay and handover expectations;
  • accommodation, meals, insurance requirements and any participant costs.

Confirm whether the arrangement is volunteering, a work exchangeA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. or paid teaching. Do not assume that every opportunity includes free accommodation and meals. If financial compensation is mentioned, ask what it covers and whether it is a salary, an allowance or reimbursement of expenses.

If participants must pay a contribution, programme fee or deposit, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the payment, cancellation and refund conditions before committing.

Before travelling, check the relevant visa or permit requirements with the official authorities and confirm with your insurer that your policy covers the proposed activities. Read Voluntouring’s guides to visas for volunteering abroad and safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges.
