Self-sufficiency is the ability of a person, household or community to meet some or all of its needs using resources it produces or manages independently. It may involve food production, water collection, energy generation, repairs and other everyday activities. Complete self-sufficiency is uncommon, and many projects aim for greater autonomy rather than total independence from outside goods and services.
Learning and practising self-sufficiency
Depending on the host, volunteers may help grow vegetables, care for animals, save seeds, preserve food, maintain buildings, collect rainwater or support other practical activities connected with everyday self-sufficient living.
Some communities already have established systems, while others are still developing them. If learning about self-sufficiency is important to you, ask which practices are currently in use, what volunteers actually do and whether practical guidance is provided.
