Research 🔬
Explore research volunteer opportunities involving scientific fieldwork, wildlife monitoring, environmental surveys, data collection and other organised research activities. Projects may be based at research stations, universities, conservation organisations or community initiatives.
Some programmes welcome beginners and provide practical training, while others require academic qualifications, technical skills or previous experience. Research placements may be unpaid, funded or subject to participation fees.
What is research volunteering? 🔬
Research volunteering involves helping with a systematic investigation designed to answer questions, collect evidence or improve understanding of a subject. Volunteers may assist with field observations, surveys, sample processing, documentation or data analysis. Research can involve natural sciences, archaeology, anthropology and other disciplines. The important distinction is that participants contribute to an actual research activity rather than simply learning about a subject during their stay.
Taking part in research projects
Depending on the programme, volunteers may record wildlife sightings, monitor habitats, collect environmental data, organise research records or assist experienced researchers in the field. Some opportunities involve laboratory work, community surveys or digital data analysis.
Ask what research methods are used, who supervises the work and how the information collected will be analysed or used. If training or academic credit is important to you, confirm what the organisation actually provides.
How to use this page
Check publication dates and confirm current availability, research activities, required qualifications, training, supervision, working hours, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or other costs directly with the organisation.
Field research, wildlife handling, laboratory work and interviews with people may require permits, ethical approval, specific safety procedures or professional qualifications. Ask about insurance and the responsibilities volunteers are permitted to undertake.
