Eco-villages 🏡
Explore eco-village volunteering opportunities with intentional communities and sustainable living projects around the world.
Eco-villages can differ considerably in size, organisation and lifestyle. Some focus on ecological farming or natural building, while others place more emphasis on community life, education, shared resources, renewable energy, cultural activities or local resilience.
Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date and confirm current conditions directly with the community before making travel plans.
What is an eco-village?
An eco-village is generally a community or settlement that intentionally tries to reduce its environmental impact while developing social, economic or cultural forms of community life.
Many eco-villages are also intentional communities, but the terms are not identical. An intentional community may be organised around many different aims, while an eco-village normally places a significant emphasis on ecological or sustainable living.
There is no single model. An eco-village does not necessarily need to be completely self-sufficient, use permaculture, practise a particular form of spirituality or follow one specific decision-making system.
Activities in eco-village volunteering projects
Depending on the community, volunteers may help with:
- gardening, farming and food production;
- permaculture and composting;
- natural building, renovation or maintenance;
- cooking and shared household activities;
- animal care;
- community events and educational activities;
- renewable energy or low-impact living projects;
- general practical tasks connected with community life.
The exact role should be explained before arrival. Some communities offer structured learning, while others are primarily practical work exchanges.
How to use this page
Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the community’s website, email address or application procedure.
Before applying, confirm the expected tasks, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay, transport and any fees, deposits or other financial arrangements.
Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.
Voluntouring does not organise placements, select participants, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. It does not process participant payments between travellers and host organisations. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of a community or opportunity.
Community life and practical expectations
Living in an eco-village can involve more communal participation than an ordinary volunteering placement. Ask about shared meals, meetings, household responsibilities, private space, visitors, internet access, quiet hours and other community rules before joining.
If the project is in a rural or remote location, also check local transport, access to shops and healthcare, mobile coverage and whether you can leave independently if necessary.
Participation in spiritual practices, workshops, communal activities or particular lifestyle choices should be clearly explained in advance rather than assumed.
