Ecotourism generally refers to nature-based tourism that seeks to limit environmental impacts, contribute to conservation and local communities, and include opportunities for learning or interpretation. A nature setting, an eco-lodge or an environmental claim alone does not necessarily make an activity ecotourism.

Relevant volunteer roles might include supporting nature tours, visitor interpretation, conservation-linked hospitality, community-based tourism, wildlife observation, guiding support or communications directly connected with these activities.
