Construction 🛠️
Explore construction volunteering opportunities involving renovation, maintenance, carpentry, traditional building, natural construction, eco-building and other hands-on projects.
Construction projects can range from simple repairs and painting to natural building, restoration and more technical work. The level of experience required varies considerably, so always check what tasks volunteers are actually expected to perform.
Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date and confirm current conditions directly with the host before making travel plans.
How to use this page
Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the host’s website, email address or application procedure.
Before applying, confirm the tasks, weekly hours, days off, supervision, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees, deposits or other financial arrangements directly with the host.
Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.
Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. It does not process participant payments between volunteers and host organisations. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of an organisation or programme.
Safety and technical work
Construction activities can involve tools, ladders, scaffolding, machinery, heavy materials, dust, chemicals and other hazards. Ask what training, protective equipment and supervision will be provided before accepting practical work.
Volunteers should not undertake structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical or other specialised work beyond their qualifications or experience. Tasks that require professional licensing or technical expertise should remain under appropriately qualified supervision and comply with applicable local building and safety requirements.
Make sure your insurance covers construction, renovation and other physical activities included in the project.
Volunteering, work exchange and employment
Construction work may also be subject to employment and immigration rules, particularly when volunteers perform regular productive work for a commercial farm, accommodation business or other income-generating project.
Accommodation or meals do not automatically make an arrangement volunteering. Confirm what legal status applies to the activities in the destination country before travelling.
