What is a charity? ❤️
A charity is generally an organisation established to pursue charitable or public-benefit purposes rather than private profit. The legal meaning and registration requirements vary between countries. Charity, non-profit and NGO can overlap, but they are not automatically interchangeable terms or legal statuses.
Donations, fees and fundraising
Do not assume that volunteering with a charity is automatically free or that accommodation and meals are always included. If money is requested, check whether it is a voluntary donation, membership payment or mandatory programme fee, and ask for the exact amount, what it covers and any cancellation or refund conditions.
If volunteers are expected to fundraise, confirm how donations are collected, which organisation receives the money and what the funds are intended to support.
