At the end of life, what really matters is not what we bought, but what we built

Smiling Black female volunteer in a blue “VOLUNTEER” shirt holding a small blond child against a plain wall. Quote reads, “At the end of life, what really matters is not what we bought, but what we built; not what we got, but what we shared; not our competence, but our character; and not our success, but our significance. Live a life that matters. Live a life of love.”

At the end of life, what really matters is not what we bought, but what we built; not what we got, but what we shared; not our competence, but our character; and not our success, but our significance. Live a life that matters. Live a life of love.

Author unknown. This quote circulates in community work, leadership and faith circles, often without a clear original source and sometimes misattributed to different writers.

For travelers and volunteers it is a good compass. Years from now you might forget the exact route you took or how much you carried in your backpack. What stays are the gardens you helped plant, the classroom you painted, the children you played with, the friendships that grew while working side by side. Focus on what you are building with others, not only on what you are collecting for yourself. Small, loving actions are what make a life feel meaningful.
