Volunteer at a Buddhist Centre in Australia

Shared recently in our Volunteer & hospitality exchange Facebook group, this opportunity is ideal for those seeking a more intentional way of living and giving. At Chenrezig Institute, one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist centers in the Western world, volunteers are invited to live, learn, and serve within a spiritually grounded community.

Location

Located in the peaceful Sunshine Coast Hinterland of Queensland, Australia, the institute offers a serene environment surrounded by forested hills, gardens, and meditation spaces. But what makes this place truly amazing is the blend of practical work and inner development.

Volunteer tasks

Volunteers contribute in areas such as meal preparation at the Big Love Café, gardening, maintaining meditation spaces (gompa), and supporting the day-to-day needs of the center. Each task becomes a form of mindful service, supported by teachings from Lama Zopa Rinpoche and the wisdom of resident monks and nuns.

Living alongside other volunteers and the ordained sangha, participants become part of a supportive and compassionate community. There’s also the chance to attend teachings, join meditations, and engage in moments of silence and reflection—all enriching the experience on a deeper level.

A bit about the place

Chenrezig Institute was founded in 1974 and is one of the first Tibetan Buddhist centres in the Western world. It was established under the guidance of Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, two respected teachers who helped bring Tibetan Buddhism to the West. The name “Chenrezig” refers to the Buddha of Compassion, and the institute carries this spirit in everything it does – from meditation to gardening.

The centre is part of the FPMT (Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition), a worldwide network of Dharma centres.

This is a nice opportunity to deepen your understanding of Dharma, grow spiritually, and serve with heart.
