Real farm life experience in Serra da Malcata, Portugal

Quinta da Bazรกgueda is a traditional farm in the heart of Serra da Malcata Natural Reserve, in central Portugal. Here you can experience real farm life, surrounded by wilderness, rivers and an authentic rural landscape, while helping a small family project that cares for heritage breeds of animals.

Host type and mission

Host type: Private family farm.

The family manages a historic farm and mountain refuge where walkers, mountaineers and nature lovers can rest. Their aim is to keep the land alive, protect local breeds and share a simple, almost self-sufficient lifestyle based on traditional Portuguese culture.

Tasks and expectations

At the moment the farm especially needs help to build an electric fence to keep goats, sheep and cows safe. Volunteers also support daily farm life such as basic animal care, gardening and small forestry or maintenance tasks, depending on the season.

The hosts value harmony, commitment and a positive attitude. The farm is rustic and remote, so you should be comfortable with simple conditions and living close to nature.

Hours, days off and season

Expected help: about 4โ€“5 hours per day, 5 days per week, with 2 days off.

They usually look for volunteers from October to March, but this can change, so please ask about current needs.

Food and accommodation

Accommodation: shared basic bedroom in the old stone farmhouse. If you prefer more privacy, you can bring your own tent and camp on the land.

Food: varied home cooked countryside food, mostly traditional Portuguese dishes. Breakfast, lunch and an extra daily meal are included, plus bread, jams, snacks, coffee and tea. Dinner may not always be included, so ask the hosts how they manage evening meals when you apply.

Fees transparency

There is no participation fee. Volunteers may need to cover their own extra food for dinners or special diet items if required.

Who is this experience for?

This project suits people who enjoy physical outdoor work, animals and a quiet, off grid environment. Families with children are welcome, as the hosts also have two sons and like to share the farm with kids and young people.

Free time and what to do nearby

In your free time you can explore the hills and hiking trails around the farm, swim in the river and discover nearby villages. Popular excursions include Cafayate, Tafรญ del Valle and Amaicha del Valle, as well as other mountain viewpoints and historical sites.

Practical information

Languages: Spanish and some basic English.

Location: Rural area in the mountains, with many rocks, cacti, wild animals and streams.

Access: You reach the area by bus, then walk about 2 km to the refuge. The farm is isolated, so do not expect frequent transport.
