Nature volunteering 🌿
Explore nature volunteering opportunities and work exchangesA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. where forests, mountains, rivers, countryside, wetlands, coastlines or other natural environments form an important part of the experience.
Projects can include farms, camps, eco-projects, rural communities, retreats, conservation initiatives, outdoor centres and other places where volunteers spend a significant amount of time living or working close to nature. The actual activities vary considerably between hosts.
What does nature volunteering mean? 🌿
Nature volunteering is a broad term for volunteer and work exchange experiences where the natural environment is a significant part of daily life or the activities. It does not necessarily mean conservation or environmental work: a project may simply involve living and helping on a farm, in a forest, beside a river or in another nature-based setting.
Living and working outdoors
Nature-based projects can involve changing weather, uneven terrain, insects, wildlife, limited transport or greater distance from shops and medical services. Conditions depend heavily on the location, so ask what clothing, equipment and physical preparation are appropriate before travelling.
If the role includes hiking, forestry, conservation fieldwork, farm machinery, construction, water activities or other potentially hazardous tasks, confirm the training, supervision and protective equipment provided and check that your insurance covers the activities involved.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm the exact location, current activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, transport, internet or phone access, minimum stay and any fees directly with the host.
A project being surrounded by nature does not automatically mean that it has an environmental or conservation purpose. If this is important to you, ask what the project actually does and how volunteers contribute.
