Karaka is a community sailing boat that takes long term crew to share a nomadic “sea gipsy” lifestyle.
The ship is run as a non profit co-op by Tom and Emma, and sails slowly around the world. This old listing described plans for the western Indian Ocean in 2020, but Karaka is still active and now follows different routes. New crew do not need sailing experience, but they should be independent, flexible and ready to live simply in a small shared space. Everyone helps with general boat tasks, watches, cleaning and maintenance. Accommodation is on board and meals are shared, but this is not a free work exchange. Every crew member pays a daily contribution to cover running costs, plus their share of the food kitty and personal expenses like visas and insurance. It is a paid cost sharing experience, so people should read the Karaka website carefully and budget well.
