Volunteers In Parks (VIP) program

The Volunteers In Parks (VIP) program lets people support US national parks while enjoying time in beautiful natural and historic places. In this story, Rebecca visits Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and meets Liz, a semi retired volunteer who trades a set number of hours each week for a free campsite and the chance to learn blacksmithing. Volunteers help visitors understand the park, answer questions and share the area’s history. At Sleeping Bear Dunes there are hundreds of different volunteer roles, many lasting two or three months. Similar opportunities exist in parks across the United States, from visitor centres and campgrounds to historic sites and nature trails. Positions are open to students, professionals taking a break and retirees looking for a new experience.

To find current vacancies and full details, people can search and apply through the official website Volunteer.gov and the National Park Service pages.
