Every year, on April 1st, many cultures around the world celebrate a day of playfulness and lighthearted deception: April Fools’ Day. It’s a moment to step back from everyday seriousness and enjoy a laugh – ideally, without offending anyone!
Where does April Fools’ Day come from?
The true origins of April Fools’ Day are uncertain, but one popular theory links it to the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 16th-century France. Those who didn’t get the memo and kept celebrating New Year’s Day on April 1st became the butt of jokes – sometimes even ending up with a paper fish stuck on their back, earning the name “April fish” (poisson d’avril in French, pesce d’aprile in Italian).
Other scholars trace the roots of the day back to ancient Roman festivals like Hilaria, dedicated to games, disguises, and playful mockery.
Why paper fish? 😄
In countries like France and Italy, school kids and playful adults alike try to sneakily stick paper fish to their friends’ backs. Once the prank is discovered, the prankster yells “Poisson d’avril!” or “Pesce d’aprile!”
The fish might symbolize gullibility – a creature that’s easy to catch.
Others say it represents the zodiac sign of Pisces, associated with the end of March.
Either way, it’s a tradition that has survived centuries and crossed borders.
Other bizarre April 1st traditions 🚫
- In Scotland, April Fools’ Day used to be called “Hunt the Gowk Day,” where people were sent on impossible errands.
- In India, people play practical jokes during the festival of Holi, which sometimes coincides with early April.
- In the UK, there’s a rule: if you prank after noon, you’re the fool!
- In the US, even big brands and newspapers sometimes join in, publishing ridiculous fake news for laughs.
Harmless pranks to try 🎫
If you’re looking to join the fun this year, here are some real-world pranks that are more clever than cruel:
1. The paper fish prank
A timeless classic in France and Italy.
Draw or print a colorful fish and secretly tape it to someone’s back.
See how long it takes them to notice!
2. The painty caress
Hide some (safe, washable) paint in the palm of your hand and gently give someone a caress on the cheek.
The surprise comes a few minutes later when they find a mysterious colored mark and wonder where it came from!
3. The “fake bug” scare
Cut out the shape of a spider or cockroach and stick it on the inside of a lamp or under a clear glass.
Wait for the reaction!
4. The toothpaste-filled cookies
Replace the filling of sandwich cookies with toothpaste and offer them as a snack.
Just make sure your “victim” isn’t allergic, and reveal the prank quickly!
5. The swapped sugar/salt trick
For an old-school classic, swap the contents of the sugar and salt containers.
Best done with someone who adds sugar to their morning coffee.
6. Breakfast surprise
This is from the National Geographic.
- Prank 1 – Serve a “fried egg and chips” meal that’s actually a sweet treat. Place half a tinned peach in a blob of yogurt to resemble a fried egg, and use peeled apple slices as the “chips.” You can even add strawberry jam as “ketchup” for extra effect.
- Prank 2 – Prepare a bowl of cereal with milk and place it in the freezer overnight. Serve it in the morning and watch as they try to dig into the solidified breakfast.
7. Invisible Easter Egg Hunt
This is from The Guardian. If Easter coincides with April Fools’ Day, tell your children there’s an Easter egg hunt in the garden. After they’ve searched fruitlessly, present them with a note from the “Easter Bunny” that reads “April Fool.”
8. Shoe Stuffing
Place scrunched-up newspaper, tissue, or old socks into the toes of someone’s shoes. When they try to put them on, their feet won’t fit.
9. Upside-down House
Flip picture frames, turn chairs upside-down, or place shoes in the fridge to create a topsy-turvy environment, leaving family members amused and confused.

A while ago, I did a night shift at the Psychiatric Service between March 31st and April 1st. In the early hours of the morning, the nurses called me: “There’s a consultation from the Emergency Room: A.L.” — the patient who had beaten me up (45 days of injury). I head over, fearless and ready to take on more, and I find a huge sign that says ” April Fools’ .”
