Slow Travel meets meaningful volunteering in the heart of Transylvania

Animal care volunteering in Romania โ€“ Tucked away in the foothills of the breathtaking Carpathian Mountains, just outside the historic city of Sibiu ๐Ÿ“, an interesting initiative is giving travellers the change to connect deeply with nature, culture, and community. Pe La Cai (On the Horses!), a growing urban farm, is inviting volunteers to take part in a hands-on experience that blends slow travel with meaningful work in animal welfare.

For those yearning for a travel experience beyond the usual tourist trail, Pe La Cai provides an opportunity to live, work, and explore Transylvania ๐Ÿ“while taking care of the local farm and ranch animals. Volunteers assist with animal careโ€”working with horses and a variety of smaller farm animals โ€“ sometimes also engaging in light construction projects to improve the farmโ€™s facilities.

Flexibility and adventure

With just 24 hours of volunteering per week (spread across six days or condensed into longer shifts), participants have ample free time to discover one of Europeโ€™s most unspoiled regions. You might be following in Draculaโ€™s footsteps, hiking through dense forests, or simply soaking up the charm of Sibiuโ€™s cobbled streets, thereโ€™s just no shortage of magic here.

Community Impact

At its core, Pe La Cai is about responsible and community-focused tourism.

Volunteers actively contribute to raising awareness about animal welfare, helping to create a better future for the animals in their care while living in a community atmosphere. No prior experience with horses is required โ€“training is provided โ€“ which makes this an accessible opportunity for both seasoned equestrians and total beginners.

Accommodation

Accommodation is provided in comfortable en-suite rooms, with home-cooked meals six days a week, making this an affordable way to travel and give back.

When mass tourism often disconnects travellers from the real essence of a place, initiatives like Pe La Cai offer an alternative โ€“ a slower, more conscious way to explore the world. By choosing to volunteer here, travellers are becoming part of a movement that values cultural exchange, ethical travel, and environmental stewardship.

If youโ€™re craving an off-the-beaten-path adventure where you can make a difference, reconnect with nature, and immerse yourself in the beauty of Transylvania, Pe La Cai might just be your next destination!

Hello and welcome to the exciting world of Pe La Cai (On the Horses!)! โ€“ Situated just outside of stunning Sibiu (a European City of Culture winner), we are a fun, fledgling but expanding urban farm.

We offer volunteers the chance to join our enthusiastic, (mostly) English-speaking team in helping us achieve our aim of working with the local community in animal welfare awareness. With beautiful horses to care for, a multitude of smaller cute animals to befriend, and some light construction work around the farm, we are sure to find volunteer projects suited to their interests and skills.

Flexible and realistic volunteering hours also allow ample time for participants to explore our fascinating areaโ€”following in Dracula’s footsteps, hiking in the most unspoiled region of Europe, or relaxing in a pavement cafรฉ. There really is something for everyone to enjoy!

Terms

Volunteers are requested to work for a minimum of 4 hours per day, 6 days a week. Total = 24 hours per week. These hours are flexible, so it is possible, for example, to work 8 hours a day for 3 days, then take 4 days off to explore our wonderful region.

Volunteers may, on occasion, be asked to help with specific tasks like cleaning stables or sweeping the yard. However, there will also be a multitude of fun projects that we hope volunteers will enjoy and become more deeply involved with.

Duration

We would ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of a month, but we will gladly host for longer periods.

Terms

There is no monetary remuneration, but we offer accommodation, 6 dinners, 6 lunches, and 6 breakfasts per week.

Accommodation will be in private en-suite rooms for couples, or a maximum of three (same-sex) volunteers sharing an en-suite room with single beds.

Experience

Experience with horses is a bonus but not essential. Training in cleaning stables and grooming will be given. There will be opportunities for experienced, competent riders to exercise the horses. There may also be the opportunity for novice riders to improve their ability, based on their commitment.

Alternatively, we have light construction work based around care and safety improvements for our animals.
