Decolonize volunteering! – Colonialism created the political and economic context, in which we live today. International volunteering takes place in this context: White Europeans go as international volunteers to the Global South, often with neo-colonial motivations of imposing Western values and mindsets onto local realities.
Join the webinar!
We invite you to a webinar, where representatives of volunteering organisations from Europe and the Global South will discuss and present critical approaches towards this:
How can international volunteering organisations respond to colonial mindsets? How do we make volunteers active citizens around global justice rather than passive believers of colonial narratives of developing, helping and saving?
The webinar will last about 45 minutes from 18:00 until 18:45 CET (Central European Time) (See here what time that is for you: https://bit.ly/3er6F4d).
How to register
Please register until 18 March at ๐ง thomas@sci.or.atย ๐งand weโll send you the Zoom link for the webinar!

Writing as an Easter European, middle-aged non-EU person, volunteering is challenging enough, with all VISA limitations, extensive process one has to complete (criminal records, medical, fees, nostrification, immunizations, flights rarely covered), not to mention that today internship and volunteer positions are regarded as employment, so organizations that don’t cover any fees, ask for and expect work references, extensive experience etc for positions that are u-n-p-a-i-d
With all that is done to discourage potential volunteers from volunteering, and in general to discourage free movement of people, there is hardly a need to add insult to injury.
