Summer Palace Beijing: Discover the Tower of Buddhist Incense

The image shows the Tower of Buddhist Incense, one of the most iconic buildings of the Summer Palace in Beijing. This former imperial garden, centred on Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake, is a masterpiece of classical Chinese landscape design and a symbol of the
Qing dynasty’s power and refinement.

First laid out in the mid-18th century for the Qianlong Emperor, the Summer Palace combines hills, water, palaces, temples and bridges to create a harmonious royal retreat. The Tower of Buddhist Incense dominates the southern slope of Longevity Hill and was used as a place for
imperial worship and contemplation. From its terraces, visitors enjoy sweeping views over Kunming Lake, the Seventeen-Arch Bridge and the distant skyline of modern Beijing.

The Summer Palace was badly damaged during foreign invasions in the 19th century but was carefully rebuilt and eventually opened to the public. In 1998 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an outstanding example of Chinese garden art. Today it is considered one of the largest and best-preserved imperial gardens in China and remains a must-see attraction for anyone interested in Chinese history and architecture.

For practical visitor information, including opening hours and transport, you can consult the official Beijing municipal guide to the Summer Palace.
