Victoria Falls is one of the largest and most famous waterfalls on Earth. It lies on the Zambezi River, which forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in southern Africa. The local name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, means “The Smoke That Thunders.” This name describes the huge spray and deep roar that rise from the gorge when the river drops into a narrow chasm. The falls are about 1.7 kilometers wide and up to 108 meters high, creating a curtain of water that changes with the seasons.

From November to April, rains swell the Zambezi and the falls become powerful and misty. Paths and viewpoints can be very wet, and the plume of spray may be seen from many kilometers away. From May to October, the dry season lowers the flow, revealing rocky ledges and separate streams. Both seasons offer excellent views, but they feel very different. On bright nights near a full moon, the spray can even create a soft lunar rainbow called a “moonbow.”

The area around the falls supports a small rainforest with ferns, palms, and fig trees that stay green thanks to the constant mist. Baboons, vervet monkeys, and many birds live here, and the wider Zambezi region hosts hippos, crocodiles, and elephants. Popular viewpoints include the Knife-Edge Bridge and the Victoria Falls Bridge. Some visitors choose guided activities such as scenic flights, river cruises, and, when water levels allow, the natural rock pool near the edge known as Devil’s Pool.

Whether you view the falls from Zimbabwe or Zambia, remember to protect cameras from spray, wear good shoes, and follow local safety rules. Your visit helps support parks and communities that care for this World Heritage Site.
