Yurt ๐
What is a yurt? Where does it come from? โ A yurt, also known as a Mongolian Ger, is a traditional dwelling of nomadic communities in Asia. There are two main types of yurts, the Mongolian and the Kyrgyz, which differ slightly in their structural details.
The Mongolian yurt has a history that dates back over 2,000 years. It is known for its ability to be easily assembled and disassembled, which is necessary for the nomadic lifestyle of the people who use them. Mongolian nomads move locations seasonally to provide grazing land for their livestock, and as such, their yurts are often taken down and rebuilt in new locations.
The traditional yurt is composed of several walls that create its circular shape, a wooden door, a large number of poles that form the frame of the house, creating an intricate design when the sun shines on it, two central pillars that support the structure, a central fireplace, a circular skylight (toono) to allow light and smoke to escape, a felt insulation that is highly effective against the cold and heat, and a cotton fabric layer that is placed under the felt.
Yurts serve as the primary family home, where all generations live and gather together. The single room is organized around the central stove, where children, parents, and grandparents gather to live, eat, sleep, and pray. Beds/benches are arranged in a circle around the walls, and a low table is often used for meals. A traditional altar for prayer and the veneration of ancestors is typically located opposite the door.
