Yoga 🧘🏿

Explore yoga volunteering opportunities at retreats, intentional communitiesAn intentional community is a group of people who deliberately choose to live or organise together around shared values, goals or practices. It may or may not be an ecovillage., ashrams, wellness projects, festivals and other places where yoga forms a genuine part of the volunteer experience.
Some hosts include yoga or meditation classes alongside practical volunteer activities, while others specifically look for experienced yoga teachers or facilitators. Check each listing to understand whether you will practise, assist with or teach yoga.
What is yoga? 🧘
Yoga is a diverse group of practices rooted in Indian philosophical and spiritual traditions. Different approaches may include physical postures, breathing practices, meditation, ethical or philosophical study and devotional practices. Contemporary yoga therefore ranges from primarily physical classes to broader spiritual or contemplative traditions.
Yoga in volunteer projects
Volunteer activities at yoga-related projects are not necessarily limited to yoga. Roles may include cooking, gardening, cleaning, maintenance, hospitality, event support or communication, while yoga classes or meditation sessions form another part of community life.
If classes, workshops or teacher training are important to you, ask whether participation is included in the exchange, optional or subject to an additional fee. Volunteering does not automatically include free courses or professional yoga training.
Teaching and practising safely
If volunteers are expected to teach yoga, confirm the training or experience required and teach only within your actual competence. Physical adjustments should respect participants’ consent, and yoga teachers should not diagnose conditions or provide medical treatment unless separately qualified and authorised to do so.
Yoga is generally considered a safe physical activity when practised appropriately, but injuries can occur. Beginners should progress gradually and avoid being pressured into postures or breathing practices beyond their experience. For an evidence-based overview, see the NCCIH information about yoga and safety.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm the current yoga activities, volunteer duties, qualifications, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees directly with the host.
A project should only appear in this archive when yoga is a genuine part of the programme or volunteer experience. Simply having space where volunteers can practise yoga in their free time is not sufficient. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not constitute verification or endorsement of a project’s yoga, wellness or therapeutic claims.
