Vegetarian volunteers 🥕
Explore vegetarian volunteer opportunities and work exchangesA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. where hosts provide vegetarian meals or can accommodate volunteers following a vegetarian diet.
Projects may include farms, intentional communitiesAn intentional community is a group of people who deliberately choose to live or organise together around shared values, goals or practices. It may or may not be an ecovillage., retreat centres, animal sanctuaries, educational initiatives and hospitality exchanges. Some hosts follow a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, while others offer vegetarian alternatives alongside meals containing meat or fish.
What is a vegetarian diet? 🥕🌱
A vegetarian diet excludes meat, poultry, fish and seafood. Some vegetarians eat eggs and dairy products, while others avoid one or both. A vegan diet excludes all animal-derived foods, including eggs, dairy and honey. Vegetarian and vegan diets therefore overlap, but they are not identical. Hosts may use these terms differently, so ask about ingredients and meal arrangements when necessary.
Volunteering with vegetarian food available
Vegetarian-friendly exchanges can involve gardening, animal care, building, cooking, teaching, hospitality or community activities. The availability of vegetarian meals does not necessarily mean that the project follows a particular ethical or environmental philosophy.
For example, HūRosa in Southern Spain offers vegetarian meals as part of its residential volunteer exchange. Other hosts provide groceries for self-catering or prepare vegetarian meals only upon request.
If you have specific dietary requirements, ask whether meals are provided daily, whether a kitchen is available and whether volunteers are expected to prepare or handle animal products during their activities.
