Tipis, also spelled teepees or tepees, may be used as volunteer accommodation, gathering spaces or part of a glamping site. Opportunities vary from campsite maintenance and hospitality exchanges to practical work involving the structures themselves.
What is a tipi? ⛺
A tipi is a portable, conical shelter traditionally used by several Indigenous peoples of the North American Great Plains. The word comes from the Dakota and Lakota term thípi. Traditional tipis were constructed with long wooden poles and coverings made from animal hides, while many modern versions use canvas. Tipis are not representative of all Indigenous North American dwellings and should not be confused with yurts or ordinary bell tents.
Volunteering with tipis
Depending on the project, volunteers may help pitch or dismantle tipis, maintain poles and canvas coverings, prepare accommodation, clean communal spaces, welcome guests or assist with gardening and general campsite activities.
Some hosts offer tipis as one of several accommodation options rather than as part of the volunteer work. If staying in a tipi is important to you, ask whether one will actually be available during your visit.
