What is a treehouse?

A treehouse is an elevated structure built in, around or among trees. Some structures are supported partly by living trees, while others use independent posts or foundations to reduce structural loads on the trees.

Treehouses may be simple platforms, small cabins, private homes, communal spaces or fully equipped accommodation. Access can involve stairs, ladders, walkways or bridges, and facilities vary considerably from one project to another.

A treehouse should not automatically be considered environmentally sustainable simply because it is built in a forest. Responsible design also depends on materials, foundations, impact on trees and surrounding vegetation, waste management, water use and the wider project.

Possible volunteer activities

Depending on the host, participants may help with:

general maintenance of treehouses and communal areas;
painting, sanding or simple repairs;
preparing building materials;
gardening and forest maintenance;
trail or pathway maintenance;
cleaning or preparing accommodation;
hospitality and welcoming guests;
other practical activities connected with the wider project.

The listing should explain which activities are actually expected. Structural construction, electrical systems, roofing and other specialist work should only be undertaken with appropriate experience, supervision and legal authorisation where required.

Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

Treehouse construction and safety

Working or staying in elevated structures can involve risks from falls, ladders, tools, unstable surfaces, severe weather and falling branches. Ask how the treehouse is accessed, what guardrails or fall-protection measures are present and who is responsible for maintenance and structural inspections.

Volunteers should not undertake structural work at height without suitable training, supervision and protective equipment. Trees supporting structures should also be assessed and maintained appropriately by people with relevant knowledge.

Fire safety is particularly important in wooden or remote accommodation. Confirm emergency procedures, evacuation routes and rules concerning cooking equipment, heaters, candles or open flames.

Make sure your insurance covers construction, work at height and other physical activities included in the project.

Treehouse accommodation and commercial projects

Some treehouses operate as lodges, resorts, glamping accommodation or other commercial hospitality businesses. Regular housekeeping, reception, guest services or maintenance duties may be considered employment under local labour or immigration rules even when accommodation is provided instead of a salary.

Before travelling, check whether the proposed activities are permitted under your immigration status. Tourist or visitor entry does not automatically allow every form of unpaid work exchange.
