What is a treehouse? 🌳🛖
A treehouse is an elevated structure built in, around or among trees. Some are supported by living trees, while others use independent posts or foundations. Treehouses can range from simple wooden platforms to fully equipped cabins with electricity, water and other facilities. Being surrounded by trees does not automatically make a building environmentally sustainable.
Building and staying in treehouses
Volunteers may help with carpentry, preparing materials, painting, repairs, maintaining walkways, cleaning accommodation or welcoming guests. The activities depend on the project and the volunteer’s experience. Ask whether treehouse construction or maintenance is actually part of the planned work.
Building or repairing elevated structures can involve ladders, tools, unstable surfaces and risks of falling. Structural work, roofing and electrical installations may require qualified workers, suitable supervision and protective equipment. Treehouse maintenance should also consider the condition of supporting trees and the surrounding environment.

Check each listing’s publication date and confirm current activities, working hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay, transport and any fees or other costs directly with the host. Some older programmes have ended or changed their accommodation arrangements.
If you will stay in a treehouse, ask about access, guardrails, emergency exits, fire safety, weather protection, toilets, showers, drinking water and electricity. Check that your insurance covers the activities involved, particularly construction or work at height.
