Tipi, tepee or teepee?
A tipi (also referred to as a teepee or tepee) is a conical tent originally made from skins, birch bark or cloth, and made famous by Native Americans of the northern Great Plains of the United States of America. The word tipi entered English from the Lakota language.
What is a tipi and where does it come from?
The tipi is mistakenly considered to be the typical dwelling of all American Indians. Native Americans generally use another type of dwelling called the wigwam, while the tipi is mostly used by tribes on the Great Plains. The simplicity of assembly certainly makes it an ideal dwelling for those who, from time to time, want to or need to move perhaps an entire village.
More features of a tipi
The tipi is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It has an opening at the tip to allow fresh air to circulate and acts as a chimney that allows to lit a fire in the centre of the tent. Some may also have a rainwater collection system.
Build a tipi
Today the teepee is mostly used for gatherings or for tourist entertainment purposes. Want to try building a tipi? Find out how here. Or apply as a volunteer in any of the volunteering opportunities you can read below.

How to use this page
Click on the announcements that interest you the most. Check the date of the publication (some opportunities might be already expired). If the announcement is still valid, look for the โcontact detailsโ section. It is usually at the end of the project description. In that section, you can find free ways to get in touch with the hosting organization (website, e-mail, phone numbers, application form). Send the host a message and wait for a reply.
Note
You may not always receive an answer from the hosts, for several reasons. Sometimes hosts live in very remote areas with a scarce internet connection or wifi. Sometimes volunteers messages are too many, so the hosts wonโt always be able to reply to all of the emails. For more information, pleaseย read our FAQ.
