Explore theatre volunteer opportunities around the world, including community theatre projects, drama workshops, performing arts programmes, theatre festivals and cultural exchanges involving theatrical activities.
Depending on the organisation, volunteers may help with acting, rehearsals, stage preparation, costumes, technical production, performances or creative workshops. Some projects welcome experienced performers, while others provide supervised opportunities for beginners.
What is a theatre project? 🎭
A theatre project involves creating, rehearsing, producing or presenting theatrical performances. Activities may include acting, storytelling, improvisation, puppetry, physical theatre, stage design and technical production. Theatre can also be used in community education and cultural programmes. Working at an arts venue does not necessarily mean participating in theatre activities.
Volunteering in theatre and performing arts
Volunteer roles may involve supporting rehearsals, preparing sets and costumes, organising performances, assisting with theatre workshops or helping a production team. Some programmes combine theatre with dance, circus, music or other artistic disciplines.
Ask whether the opportunity involves performing, technical work, event organisation or general assistance. Some roles require previous experience, while others offer training. If your creative work will be recorded or published, clarify consent, attribution and usage rights.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm current activities, required experience, rehearsal or performance schedules, working hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or other costs directly with the organiser.
For theatre activities involving children or vulnerable participants, ask about safeguarding, volunteer screening and supervision. Technical roles involving lighting, scenery, elevated platforms or electrical equipment may require specialist training and safety precautions.
