TEFL – TESOL 🎓

TEFL and TESOL volunteer teaching opportunities abroad

Explore TEFL and TESOL volunteer opportunities abroad, including English teaching placements, teacher-training experiences, internships and programmes where a TEFL, TESOL or related English-language teaching qualification is required, preferred or meaningfully connected with the role.

TEFL and TESOL are broad terms used in English-language teaching rather than the names of one universal certification. Courses and qualifications can differ considerably in length, assessment, teaching practice, recognition and quality.

Not every opportunity to teach or practise English belongs in this section. Informal conversation exchanges, host-family language practice and volunteer roles that simply ask for good English are better classified under Teaching English abroad unless TEFL or TESOL training is genuinely relevant.

Some listings may be archival or no longer recruiting. Always check the publication date and confirm current qualification requirements, teaching responsibilities and programme conditions directly with the organisation before applying.

What belongs in this section?

We use the TEFL – TESOL tag when a recognised or relevant English-language teaching qualification is required or preferred, when the programme provides TEFL/TESOL training or certification, when teaching practice may form part of a qualification, or when the role is specifically presented as a TEFL/TESOL position. General English conversation exchanges do not automatically belong here.

What do TEFL and TESOL mean?

TEFL commonly stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. The term is often used for teaching English in places where English is not the main language used in everyday life.

TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. It is commonly used as a broader term covering English-language teaching in a variety of contexts.

In practice, the terminology used by training providers, employers and education systems can overlap. A course labelled TEFL is not automatically inferior or superior to one labelled TESOL simply because of its name.

What matters more is the actual qualification, training, assessment, supervised teaching practice and recognition relevant to the role you want to perform.

TEFL and TESOL are not one standard certificate

There are many TEFL and TESOL courses offered by universities, training organisations, private companies and online providers. Their requirements and recognition can differ significantly.

Before paying for a course, consider:

  • who awards or validates the qualification;
  • whether it is regulated or recognised in the context where you plan to use it;
  • the number of training hours;
  • whether supervised teaching practice with real learners is included;
  • how trainees are assessed;
  • whether tutors have appropriate qualifications and experience;
  • whether prospective employers or programmes actually recognise it.

As one example, the British Council’s Accreditation UK framework evaluates certificate-level ELT/TESOL qualifications using criteria that include external validation or appropriate regulation, at least 100 hours of relevant input and supervised teaching practice. Other countries and employers may use different standards.

What can a TEFL or TESOL volunteer role involve?

Depending on the organisation and your experience, activities may include:

  • supporting English-language classes;
  • leading conversation activities;
  • preparing lesson plans and classroom materials;
  • helping learners practise pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar;
  • supporting a qualified local teacher;
  • working with adult language learners;
  • helping with language camps or educational workshops;
  • providing teacher-training support when appropriately qualified;
  • completing supervised teaching practice;
  • other education-related activities described in the individual programme.

A short-term volunteer with an entry-level qualification should not automatically be expected to perform the same responsibilities as an experienced professional teacher.

Do you need a TEFL or TESOL qualification?

It depends entirely on the opportunity.

Some volunteer programmes welcome fluent English speakers primarily for conversation practice and cultural exchange. Others prefer applicants who have completed teacher training, while formal schools or paid positions may require specific qualifications, degrees or professional experience.

Read the individual listing rather than assuming that every English-teaching opportunity requires TEFL or that every TEFL-tagged position accepts beginners.

If a qualification is described as mandatory, ask exactly which certificates the organisation accepts.

Native speaker and qualified teacher are not the same thing

Being a native or highly fluent English speaker does not by itself provide training in lesson planning, classroom management, language acquisition or safeguarding.

Likewise, many skilled English-language teachers learned English as an additional language themselves and may have substantial teaching qualifications and experience.

Hosts should define the actual language level, qualifications and teaching skills required rather than assuming that nationality alone determines teaching ability.

Immigration or employment systems may nevertheless impose their own eligibility requirements for paid teaching positions, so these must be checked separately.

TEFL volunteering and teaching practice

Some people look for volunteer placements because they need classroom experience or supervised teaching practice as part of teacher training.

Do not assume that ordinary volunteer hours will automatically count towards a TEFL or TESOL qualification.

Before travelling, ask your course provider whether the placement meets its requirements and confirm:

  • how many teaching-practice hours are required;
  • whether lessons must involve real learners;
  • whether observation by a qualified assessor is required;
  • what documentation must be completed;
  • whether the host organisation must meet particular standards.

A volunteer organisation cannot normally decide on behalf of your training provider whether its placement satisfies your certification requirements.

Programmes that provide TEFL or TESOL training

Some organisations combine volunteering with teacher training and may provide a TEFL or TESOL course, internship or certificate as part of a longer programme.

For example, some teaching programmes featured on Voluntouring have offered longer-term TESOL internships or certificates alongside classroom experience.

If certification is included, ask who awards it, what training is provided, whether there is supervised teaching practice and whether the qualification is recognised for the purpose you intend to use it for.

The statement “TEFL certificate included” is not enough on its own to establish the quality or recognition of the qualification.

Teaching children and safeguarding

Many English-teaching programmes involve children or teenagers, so safeguarding should be treated as part of professional teaching practice rather than an optional extra.

Child safeguarding notice

A volunteer teaching qualification should not provide automatic or unsupervised access to children. Good programmes define roles clearly, provide supervision, protect children’s privacy and use appropriate recruitment or background checks where required. International volunteers should support rather than unnecessarily replace permanent local educators.

Before joining a school or youth programme, ask:

  • whether the organisation has a safeguarding policy;
  • who supervises volunteers in the classroom;
  • whether background or reference checks are required;
  • what rules apply to photographs and social media;
  • whether volunteers teach independently or support permanent staff;
  • what happens when a volunteer stays only for a short period.

For more information, read Voluntouring’s guide to safer volunteering with children.

Supporting local teachers

International English-speaking volunteers can sometimes provide useful conversation practice, new materials or additional classroom support. This should complement the knowledge and continuity provided by local educators.

Ask whether permanent teachers are involved in planning and whether the role responds to an actual educational need.

A volunteer programme should be cautious about repeatedly replacing teachers with short-term international visitors simply because volunteer labour is cheaper.

Volunteer exchange or paid teaching job?

English teaching abroad can range from informal cultural exchange to professional paid employment.

A volunteer role might involve limited conversation practice in exchange for accommodation and meals. A professional language-school position may involve fixed classes, assessment, curriculum responsibilities and a salary.

These should not be treated as interchangeable arrangements.

If the position is paid, confirm the salary, contract, teaching hours, preparation time, benefits, deductions and work-permit requirements. Paid opportunities can also be explored in the Job offers section.

Visas and work permits

Teaching is an area where immigration rules deserve particular attention.

Do not assume that an unpaid classroom role is automatically permitted on tourist status. A language school, commercial teaching centre, paid position or structured internship may be treated differently from informal cultural exchange or volunteering with a non-profit organisation.

Requirements can depend on:

  • your nationality;
  • the destination country;
  • whether the role is paid or unpaid;
  • the type of school or host organisation;
  • the number of teaching hours;
  • the benefits provided;
  • the duration of the placement.

Verify current requirements through official immigration or consular sources before travelling.

Voluntouring also provides general information about visas for volunteering and work exchanges abroad.

Accommodation, meals and fees

TEFL and TESOL opportunities use different financial arrangements.

Some volunteer programmes provide accommodation and meals in exchange for teaching support. Others provide accommodation only, require a programme fee or offer a stipend, pocket money or salary.

If a mandatory fee applies, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the cancellation and refund conditions.

A programme fee does not automatically indicate quality, and a free placement is not automatically well supervised. Evaluate teaching conditions, safeguarding, qualifications and educational purpose separately.

How to use this page

Browse the opportunities below and open the complete listing before applying. Check the publication date first because teaching positions, school calendars and qualification requirements can change.

Before applying, confirm:

  • whether TEFL, TESOL or another qualification is required or preferred;
  • which qualifications the host accepts;
  • the age and English level of the learners;
  • whether you teach independently or assist another teacher;
  • class size and teaching hours;
  • lesson-planning responsibilities;
  • training and supervision;
  • safeguarding procedures when children are involved;
  • weekly schedule and days off;
  • accommodation and meals;
  • fees, pocket money or salary;
  • minimum stay;
  • insurance requirements;
  • visa or work-permit requirements.

If the listing only involves informal English conversation or cultural exchange and does not mention TEFL/TESOL training or qualifications, explore the broader Teaching English abroad archive instead.

Voluntouring does not accredit TEFL or TESOL courses, certify teachers, arrange visas or assess whether a qualification is accepted by a particular employer or education authority. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not itself constitute endorsement of a training provider, school or qualification.

For additional guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges.
