TEFL and TESOL 📜🎓
Explore TEFL and TESOL volunteer opportunities abroad, including English teaching placements, teacher-training internships and programmes where relevant English-language teaching qualifications are required, preferred or provided.
Some organisations welcome trainee teachers looking for practical experience, while others need qualified educators. Activities, supervision, qualifications and financial arrangements vary between programmes. Not every opportunity to teach or practise English requires TEFL or TESOL training.
What are TEFL and TESOL? 📜🎓
TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language, commonly associated with teaching English in countries where it is not the main everyday language. TESOL means Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and is used more broadly in different educational contexts. These terms do not describe one universal certificate. Training courses and qualifications differ in duration, assessment, supervised teaching practice and recognition.
Qualifications and teaching practice
Some programmes require a TEFL or TESOL qualification, while others consider it an advantage or provide training themselves. Before paying for a course, check who awards the qualification, how trainees are assessed, whether supervised teaching practice with real learners is included and whether the qualification is accepted where you intend to teach.
Volunteer teaching hours do not automatically count towards certification. If you need practical experience for a course, confirm the placement requirements with your training provider and ask the host about supervision, assessment and documentation.
Teaching roles and safeguarding
Depending on the organisation, volunteers may prepare lessons, assist local teachers, lead language activities, provide tutoring or complete supervised teaching practice. A fluent English speaker is not necessarily a qualified teacher, and teaching experience should match the responsibilities of the role.
For programmes involving children, confirm safeguarding policies, background checks, training, supervision and reporting procedures. Volunteers should not have unsupervised responsibility for children without appropriate preparation and authorisation. Activities should support local educators rather than unnecessarily replace permanent teaching staff. Read more about volunteering with children and safer alternatives.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm current availability, accepted qualifications, learners’ age groups, actual teaching duties, lesson preparation, supervision, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or other costs directly with the host.
If a programme includes certification, verify who issues it and whether it meets your needs. Clarify any salary, allowance, programme fee or deposit, including payment and refund conditions. Teaching abroad, even unpaid, may require specific immigration permission and insurance coverage. See our guides to visas for volunteering abroad and safety and legality.
