Teaching English abroad 👨🏽‍🏫🌍

Blackboard with English greetings written in chalk

Explore teaching English abroad opportunities in schools, language centres and community projects around the world. Browse announcements involving English lessons, classroom support and conversation practice, and check the individual listing to understand the role.

Some hosts look for confident English speakers to support language activities, while others need qualified teachers. Opportunities may involve volunteering, an exchange with accommodation or meals, or financial compensation. These arrangements should not be treated as interchangeable.

Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Check the publication date, application deadline and current availability before making plans.

Teaching, classroom support or conversation practice?

Read beyond the announcement’s title to understand what you would actually be doing:

  • English teaching: preparing and delivering lessons, following an agreed curriculum and supporting students’ progress;
  • Classroom support: helping a teacher prepare materials, organise learning activities or assist smaller groups;
  • Conversation practice: helping learners practise spoken English through discussions, language games or other guided activities.

Ask who plans the lessons, which materials are available and who provides guidance. Informal conversation practice should not gradually turn into independent classroom teaching or other responsibilities that were not agreed beforehand.

English skills and teaching qualifications

English does not have to be your first language for every opportunity. However, hosts may have different language, experience and eligibility requirements, so check the individual announcement rather than assuming that every role accepts the same applicants.

Speaking English fluently is not the same as being trained to teach it. Some schools may require a qualification in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), previous classroom experience or other relevant credentials. Ask which qualifications are accepted and what preparation the role requires.

For examples of English teaching qualifications, you can consult Cambridge English’s qualification information. Do not assume that one certificate meets every school’s or destination’s requirements.

Describe your English level, qualifications and teaching experience accurately when applying. Voluntouring.org promotes volunteering and work exchangeA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. opportunities for adults aged 18 and over; individual opportunities may have additional requirements.

Volunteering, work exchange or paid teaching?

Confirm whether the opportunity is unpaid volunteering, an exchange with accommodation or meals, or a paid position. Do not assume that every announcement includes free accommodation, full meals or a salary.

If financial compensation is mentioned, ask for the exact amount, payment schedule and any deductions. Clarify whether it is a salary, an allowance or reimbursement of expenses. For paid teaching, request written details about the employer, contract, working hours and accommodation arrangements.

If participants must pay a contribution, programme fee or deposit, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the payment, cancellation and refund conditions before committing.

You can also explore the broader job opportunities archive, which is not limited to teaching.

Teaching responsibly and safeguarding learners

Volunteer activities should support local educators and follow the learners’ needs rather than replace paid teaching staff. Ask how your skills and proposed length of stay fit the school’s teaching programme and how learning continues between volunteers.

For activities involving children, ask about the organisation’s child protection policy, code of conduct, reference and background checks, training and supervision. Confirm who is responsible for safeguarding and how concerns should be reported.

Follow the organisation’s rules on contact with students, photographs, social media and personal information. Speaking English well is not a reason to bypass screening or give an unprepared volunteer independent responsibility for children.

Read more about volunteering with children and safer alternatives.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details section at the end of the listing and follow its application instructions. Do not use the comments section as a substitute for contacting the host through the indicated procedure.

Before applying, confirm:

  • the students’ age groups, English levels and typical class sizes;
  • the exact teaching or support duties and required qualifications;
  • teaching hours, lesson preparation time, other duties and days off;
  • available materials, training, supervision and safeguarding arrangements;
  • school dates, minimum stay and any holiday closures;
  • accommodation, meals, participant costs and any financial compensation.

Before travelling, check official immigration information for your nationality, destination, intended activities and length of stay. Do not assume that permission to visit a country also permits teaching or work exchanges. See Voluntouring’s guides to visas for volunteering abroad and safety and legality.

Confirm with your insurer that your policy covers the teaching or volunteer activities you plan to undertake, your destination and the full duration of your stay. Read the guide to travel insurance for volunteers for points to check.
